Soft spots in your trailer floor are the most obvious sign of crossmember failure. If the floor flexes or gives when you walk on it, the crossmembers underneath are no longer providing support. Look underneath your trailer for visible rust on the crossmembers. Surface rust is one thing, but when the rust has eaten through the steel, the crossmember has lost its strength. Floor boards that sag between support points tell you the crossmembers have failed in that area. Cracked or completely broken crossmembers need replacement before you load that trailer again. If rust has spread beyond the crossmembers into the frame rails, you may need full frame welding and structural repair.
